A Jack RIng Surf Camp

A young man with a tanned complexion and a relaxed smile stands barefoot on a sandy beach at sunset. He wears a black t-shirt with a small printed slogan, white loose-fitting pants, and a red cap worn backward. The ocean waves roll in behind him under a pastel-colored sky.

Meet your host

What’s the Craic, Everyone?

Hey, I’m Jack! I’m 29, and for the past six years, I’ve been traveling the world, discovering some unreal places along the way. Travel has slowly become my life and passion, and one day, I dream of opening my own hostel. In fact, I reckon the only way I’ll ever stop traveling is if I set up a hostel and live vicariously through the amazing people who come and go.

Over the years, I’ve worked in a few hostels and even lived in a six-bed dorm for a couple of years while bouncing around. I’ve learned so much from those experiences. While I’m not quite ready to open my own place yet, the idea of running my own adventure trips in some of my favorite destinations started to take shape. And the first? A surf camp in a place that means a lot to me.

Now, let’s talk about surfing. It wasn’t something that came naturally to me. I spent a year in Hawaii over two trips, and that’s where I first picked it up—without a single lesson. Looking back, I probably made things way harder for myself by being too stubborn to get help. After months on a foam board in Hawaii, I set off through Central America, picked up my first shortboard, and spent months wiping out before finally going back to Hawaii (and back on the foamie).

But here’s the thing—once surfing clicks, it completely takes over your life. And that’s exactly what happened to me. Now, my days and travel routes revolve entirely around the waves.

I originally came to South Africa with a friend to work on a surf project across Africa, but somehow, we ended up in Jeffreys Bay—the surf capital. While there, we got deeply involved with the local surf community and even raised €9,000for JBay Surfhouse, an NGO that helps local kids get into the water.

That’s when I truly fell in love with this place. As my own surfing improved, the idea of running my own surf camps started to take shape—and looking back, it’s easily one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. We built the camp around surfing, adventure, and just the right amount of adrenaline—a place where people could push their limits, experience new things, and most importantly, have a good craic. Along the way, I’ve made lifelong friends and had some of the best experiences of my life.

There are a hundred reasons why I love these camps—watching someone catch their first wave, seeing people overcome their fears by skydiving, or simply sharing the excitement of a new adventure. But my absolute favorite part? Watching complete strangers become lifelong friends. Months after a camp ends, I’ll see people meeting up in random countries and think, “If it weren’t for the camp, they’d never have met.”

We all have friends back home, but it’s not every day you find people who are willing to drop everything and explore the world with you. And that’s what makes these surf camps so special.

A group of surfers posing for a selfie in front of a surf lodge. The shirtless man in the foreground holds the camera with a big smile, while the group behind him, dressed in wetsuits, stands with colorful surfboards, making surf signs and smiling. The setting is a sunny coastal town with blue skies and a bright, cheerful atmosphere.
A group of smiling friends gathers in a cozy, wooden-beamed lodge, laughing as they lift one of their friends horizontally in the air. The atmosphere is warm and lively, capturing the fun, community-driven spirit of a surf camp or group trip.

After running three camps, I’ve noticed people come for all sorts of reasons:

• They really want to learn how to surf and need a hand getting started.

• They want to travel South Africa but feel it’s a bit risky to do solo, so this camp gives them a safe and solid starting point.

• They’re just dipping their toes into solo travel and use this camp as a way to ease into it because, let’s be honest, it can be daunting.

• They want to push themselves, try new things, and meet like-minded people who are up for an adventure.

Whatever category you fall into—or maybe it’s a mix of all of them—I’m pretty sure you’ll get exactly what you’re looking for.

Got Questions About the Surf Camp? Here Are Some Answers:

I’ve gotten a few questions about the camp, so I’ll try to answer them below:

No prior surfing experience needed – The camp is perfect for beginners, but we also accommodate intermediate surfers. If you’re already comfortable in the water and looking for bigger waves, you might want to wait for one of our winter surf camps in South Africa when the swells are bigger.

Flights & Airport Pickup – The nearest airport is Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), and that’s where we’ll pick you up.

Is it safe? – Yes! The area we’re in is safe, and we’ve never had any issues.

Beachfront Location – The lodge is right by the ocean, ideal for sunrise and sunset swims.

Activities & Flexibility – There’s a full list of included activities, but you’re not locked into doing everything. If you want to take a break, chill at the lodge, or skip a lesson, it’s totally up to you.

If you’re reading this and thinking about joining the next surf camp, send me a message on Fleetwood Pack Instagram, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

JBay is a special place, and I’m buzzing to get back there for the next camp—surfing, new friends, and unforgettable memories await! 😊
