SURF CAMPS
26 Jan - 09 Feb 2025
Meet your host
I’ve always had this one dream: to work in hotels all over the world, connecting my passion for the hotel industry with my love for traveling. But I never imagined it would turn out better than I thought. Now, I’ve managed to merge everything I love: my passion for hotels, traveling, surfing, and horse riding. It’s a dream come true. So, I aim to gather amazing experiences from different hotels and surf camps worldwide, embracing both the pros and cons, with the ultimate goal of one day settling down and building my own perfect surf camp. Hosting my own surf camp is a significant step toward achieving that dream.
Let me tell you my story:
Hey there! I’m Emmi, a mix of German and Swedish blood, with a childhood filled with horses and family coastal trips. I always had the feeling that there is so much more in this world to explore, and that I couldn’t just start a boring 9 to 5 job and stay in my hometown for the rest of my life. I was on my way to chase the ultimate feeling of freedom. So I moved out at 18 and traveled to Australia, worked there for 6 months on a horse ranch, flew to New Zealand for a camper van adventure, then surfed through Southeast Asia. Now, I won’t lie; surfing didn’t come naturally to me. Let’s just say I spent more time wiping out than riding waves. But it’s the special feeling you get when it’s just you, the power of the ocean, being connected to nature. I tell you, there is no better feeling than sitting in the ocean in the rain; I can’t explain, you have to feel it yourself.
My brain was craving another workout, so I moved back to Germany and studied hotel management, soaking up every bit of experience I could get in that industry. But soon enough, those city skyscrapers felt like prison bars, and I realised my happiness comes with traveling, the ocean, and pure nature. I mixed my love for travel, surfing, and horses to find my dream job. It began with volunteering at a surf camp in Portugal, caring for the horses. After helping out in the camp, the owner asked if I wanted to manage the place. Unsure at first, I jumped in and learned as I went. Despite the tough start, I ended up loving every moment. After one year, I set out for my next adventure.
When I saw photos of an amazing beachfront Surf lodge in South Africa, I was hooked. I was determined to work there, no matter what. Even though only a volunteer position was open, I believed in myself. So, six months later, I found myself managing the place—a dream come true. I completely fell head over heels for the unique vibe you get when you’re in J-Bay. From the waves to the wildlife, and the people, it’s all a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. After a year, I was still not ready to leave this place. I’ve never seen more people returning to a place than J-Bay.
So I asked myself: “Is there anything better than managing this dream lodge?” Yes, there is. Nothing would make me happier than to give you this same experience of this magical place. I want to bring people from all over the globe together for a life-changing experience, where strangers become like family, creating lifelong bonds and making memories to last a lifetime. Just imagine: waking up in that beach villa, diving into a sunrise swim, savouring a delicious breakfast, and hitting the waves for surf lessons. But that’s just the start! Each day brings a new adventure, from thrilling safaris with lions and elephants to adrenaline-pumping bungee jumps and an unforgettable day at the lake house with all-day wakeboarding. It’s all about creating moments that will leave you saying, “Wow!”
